The discipline of international relations is not a homogeneous field, nor is it abstracted from the most recent discussions in the social sciences. In recent years there have been more and more contributions that seek to go beyond the traditional paradigms and confront the discipline with the reflection of its own contradictions. A voice such as that of Mariela Cuadro and her dissertation on the so-called "peripheral orientalism" in Latin American international relations provides a critical look at the way the discipline has positioned itself and approached the complexity of the Middle East and the routes that must be built to break out of the hegemonic canons.
